How do I create sales promotions using customer discounts?

If you are running a sales promotion and want to offer a special discount for certain items to some or all of your customers, you can easily configure your catalogue to automatically apply that discount.

Option A: No existing discounts

If your customers do not get any discounts at present, you can go ahead and create a new discount by following the guide to setting up customer discounts . At the end of the promotion you can then remove the discount from all the customers by following the guide to removing customer discounts.

Option B: Handling existing discounts

If you already have preset discounts set up for specific groups of customers then any new discounts you apply will be chained together with the existing discounts. For example, if your wholesale customers get a 5% discount and you configure a new discount of 15% for a sales promotion then your wholesale customers will get a 20% discount in total.

If you want your sales promotion discount to over-ride any previous discounts then you need to configure the discount promotion differently. Let’s do an example where existing “Gold” customers get a 5% discount already and “Silver” customers get a 2% discount. You want to promote certain items by giving a 15% discount on them. You do not want your customers to get 20% or 17% discounts. You want it to be capped at 15%. First, follow this guide to create a customer group that you will use to apply the discount. Let’s call this customer group: “15% promotion”. All customers who are eligible for the discount should be placed in this customer group. Thereafter follow this guide to do a bulk-update of the customer group discounts. You will be presented with a spreadsheet that lists all your existing discounts. The new “15% promotion” customer group will also appear in this spreadsheet. For each line in the spreadsheet add a new discount value in the “15% promotion” field. For “Gold” customers the value should be 10%. For “Silver” customers the value should be 13%. This will ensure that all customers get a 15% discount in total. At the end of the promotion you can then remove the extra discount from all the customers by following the guide to removing customer discounts. All customers will then go back to getting their previous discounts.
