How web console login sessions work
The Onsight web console lets you multitask by opening it in several browser tabs at the same time. It also keeps you logged in even when you are away from your computer, so that you can easily pick up where you left off when you come back again. However, your web console login session can be affected by how you use different tabs, browsers and devices, as well as by inactivity or changes to your account. This article explains how web console sessions work, how long you stay logged in, what can cause a session to end, and what the different session messages mean.
Opening multiple tabs in the same browser
Opening the web console in more than one tab in the same browser is safe and works exactly as you would expect. Both tabs share the same login session, so you can, for example, view an order in one tab while you look up product information in another.
To open the web console in a second tab, open a new tab in your browser, go to https://sales.onsightapp.com and you will be logged in automatically. You can open as many tabs as you need this way. For step-by-step instructions, see How can I have multiple web console screens open at the same time?
What happens when you use a different browser or device
The web console only supports one active session per login at a time. This means that if you log in using a different browser, even on the same computer, or on a different device such as a laptop, phone or tablet, your original session ends immediately.
For example, if you are logged in using Chrome and then open the web console in Firefox, your Chrome session will end. The same happens if you log in on a second computer while you are already logged in on the first.
This is a security feature. It ensures that only one person is using a login at any given time.
Session alerts you might see
When your session ends, the web console shows you a message explaining why. There are two different messages, and knowing which one you are seeing makes it easier to work out what happened.
The first is “Your session is no longer valid. Please log in again.” You will see this when:
- You log in on a different device or browser while you are already logged in somewhere else.
- You have multiple tabs open in the same browser and you log out in one of the tabs. When you try to do something in the other tabs, this message will appear.
- Someone changes your password, or you reset it yourself.
- An administrator ends your session or sets your account to inactive.
When this message appears, log in again to continue.
The second message is “You have either signed in or logged out in another tab. Please refresh this tab to continue.” You will see this when:
- You are logged in as one user in a tab, then open another tab in the same browser and log in as a different user. When you try to do something in the original tab, this message will appear.
Refresh the tab to continue as the new user.
How long your session lasts
How long you stay logged in depends on whether you tick “Remember me” when you log in.
Without “Remember me” ticked, your session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity. Inactivity means you have not clicked or navigated anywhere in the web console. If you are actively using the console, your session stays open regardless of how long you have been logged in.
With “Remember me” ticked, your session lasts for 7 days of inactivity instead. If you find that you are being logged out sooner than you would like, ticking “Remember me” when you next log in should help.
If you keep getting logged out unexpectedly
If you keep seeing “Your session is no longer valid” and you have not changed your password or switched devices yourself, it is likely that someone else is logging into the web console using your username and password. Each time they log in on their device, your session ends.
The most straightforward fix is to make sure that each person who needs access has their own login. If a colleague needs their own access, contact Onsight support to set up an additional user account for them.
If you think someone may be using your login without your knowledge, reset your password straight away. Go to the login page at https://sales.onsightapp.com and click “Forgot password?”. For more details, see How do I reset my password?
